Homeopathy & Acupuncture in Asthma |
|
|
The principle behind homeopathic treatment is that a tiny, very diluted amount of substances treat the illness that cause the disease if given at higher or more concentrated doses.
A systematic review of six double-blind trials in which the effect of homeopathic medication was compared with a placebo (dummy pills with no meds ) , two of these were conducted in children and four in adults. These studies concluded that the benefits of homeopathy on asthma symptoms remains unproved. Homeopathic practitioners identify a phenomenon called “aggravation,” that occurs in approx. 10% -20% of patients
and results in worsening of symptoms for several hours after taking homeopathic medicine. That is a precaution that your homeopathic doctor might talk to you before the trial.
Acupuncture
There are only a small number of clinical trials that have focused on children. Evidence from case studies suggests that acupuncture is an effective alternative to modern medicines for asthma. The routcome of RCTs and systematic reviews have been mixed, partly because poorly planned studies. The positive effects of alternative therapies like acupuncture have been found more often in smaller studies (ie, small sample size, no randomization, and inadequate analysis).
The use of acupuncture rarely has resulted in any serious side effects like air leak in the lungs, injury to nerves, and skin infections. A summary of twelve
studies including more than 1 million treatments showed that the risk of a serious side effects from acupuncture is approximately 0.05 per 10,000 treatments and 0.55 per 10,000 individual patients. This risk is lower than that of some common prescription medications. Acupunctures relative safety means that it can be tolerated if parents elect to use it as an supplementary therapy to conventional treatments.
